Review
If you have a family, own a small business or have a home office, you know how important it is to not only stay connected but to also keep your files and information secure. You need a network attached storage (NAS) device that is not only compatible with all of your devices and operating systems but that also keeps your data secure.
The QNAP TS-453A provides tight security features. With military grade AES encrypted access and IP blocking, your information will always be protected—regardless of if the disk drives or entire device is stolen. Additionally, you have the option of extra security with four IP camera channels for comprehensive surveillance, allowing you to monitor your home or business.
With data recovery options, the 453A allows you to schedule data backups to your storage device or remote server. Furthermore, the 453A allows you to restore or backup data from cloud services such as Google Drive and Dropbox. With the included QTS Storage Manager’s Snapshot feature, you can even restore data that you took a snapshot of, enabling you to restore important files that may have been corrupted or lost at a given point in time. With the Qsirch utility feature, you can find files quickly. Qsirch shows file thumbnails and allows you to preview files, so you don’t have to search through files aimlessly.
For home users, the 453A isn’t just a secure NAS device, it can double as an epic multimedia player with features that other storage devices just don’t have. While you can connect and sync your device with your laptop, desktop, tablet or smartphone, you can even connect to your television. With the integrated Kodi media player and Plex Home Theater applications as well as its compatibility with YouTube and browsers such as Google Chrome, you can use your device to connect to your television to browse the web, watch 4K video or share other media with your friends and family.
For basic functions, the 453A is simple enough to setup, but for the more advanced features, you need much more than a basic understanding of NAS devices. However, all in all, the 453A is a great network attached storage device that is great for centralized storage, boasts excellent multimedia features and also provides tight security options. If you need a network attached storage device that does it all, the QNAP TS-453A is a solid option.

Synology DiskStation DS412+
Review
Specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses, DS412+ provides a high-performance, easy to manage, and full-featured network attached storage solution to centralize data backup, protect critical assets, and share files across different platforms. The DS412+ optimizes your working experience by enabling faster and more efficient data transfers. Coming with USB 3.0 support which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps (about 10 times faster than USB 2.0), DS412+ takes less time to transfer data to external hard drives and consumes less power.
The DS412+ features hot-swappable drives which ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement. In addition, the DS412+ incorporates a passive cooling structure to avoid dependency on a dedicated processor cooling fan, thus mitigating any critical point of failure. When the system detects a fan failure, the built-in redundancy mechanism ensures continuous operation until the replacement fan arrives.
The DiskStation Manager (DSM) is a sleek, browser-based operating system running on every DiskStation and RackStation, which makes managing your Synology NAS a breeze. Featuring an intuitive user interface, DSM makes accessing and sharing your data smarter and simpler. The DS412+ provides seamless storage solutions for virtualization environments, including VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V. With VMware vSphere® 5 & VAAI integration,
With the support of Windows AD, LDAP, and Domain Trust, DS412+ enables seamless account integration. The User Home feature can automatically create a "home" folder for every user account to minimize the administrator's effort in repeatedly creating "home" folders for all accounts. Windows ACL support on DS412+ allows IT administrators to fine tune access controls and set up privileges to files and folders on DS412+ through the familiar Windows user interface. With compatibility for major protocols, DS412+ can eliminate server configuration overhead and enhance IT administrators’ efficiency.
Enjoy seamless files sharing across Windows®, Mac®, and Linux® platforms as DS412+ offers comprehensive network protocol support including FTP, SMB2, AFP, NFS and WebDAV. With Windows AD and LDAP integration, DS412+ can fit effortlessly into any existing network environment - there is no need for IT administrators to maintain two sets of credentials. You also won't worry about missing files with the Recycle Bin feature which is supported on AFP, CIFS, File Station, and WebDAV. All files deleted in a shared folder will be automatically moved into the Recycle Bin.
Synology DS412+ can serve as a centralized backup target. PC users can back up their data to the DS412+ using Windows Backup, while Mac OS X users enjoy native Apple® Time Machine integration. You can also back up data and applications from your DS412+ to another DiskStation, rsync servers, external drives, or even Amazon® S3 and Glacier cloud service. "Backup & Replication" allows you to schedule backup tasks and restore the server to any particular point in time, while minimizing storage consumption and processing time by saving only the specific data block that has been changed between versions. With Cloud Station, files on your PC can be backed up to DS412+. Whenever you modify a file, the changes are backed up on DS412+ automatically.
